It all started in 1818 when Oriental Life Insurance Company, the earliest life insurance company on Indian ground started its operations. In the year 1870 Bombay Mutual Life Assurance Society, the first Indian life insurance company launched its business operations. In 1912 The Indian Life Assurance Companies Act was enacted as the first statute in order to regulate the life insurance business in the country. In the year 1956, 245 Indian and foreign insurers and provident societies were taken over by the central government and state-owned. LIC was formed by an Act of Parliament, viz LIC Act, 1956 with an initial capital contribution of Rs. 5 crore from the Indian Government.
