Factors which Influence the Diesel Price in Kolkata

The Economic downturn in the World, as well as the country in general, has been triggered by the intense impacts of the Pandemic situation that has been responsible for triggering a downslide in the functioning of the global economy with demand indicators down at an all-time low and negativity persisting in the market conditions with conservative purchase behaviour and insecure buyer sentiments prevailing in the economic environment. With the Pandemic taking its turn towards a devastating situation, transportation and trading activities came to a halt with a complete stoppage in the economy’s revenue generation process. This led to large-scale job loss and unemployment in the economy, and the indications pointed to a deceleration in the functioning of the economy.

GST on Diesel in Kolkata

The Goods and Services Tax (GST) may be a multi-stage, unified legal system introduced in India in July 2017. All kinds of commodities and services are taxed under the GST regime currently. GST doesn’t apply to diesel and petrol, and thus, the present diesel rate in Kolkata isn’t impacted by GST. The fuel price will reduce drastically if GST is levied even at the very best rate.

Diesel Prices Witness a Hike Across the Country

State-run Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) retailed a litre of diesel for Rs.80.53 in the capital on Saturday. The rates had gone abreast of 22 days since the daily revision of rates restarted on June 7 before the rates saw an interruption within the last five days. On a mean, the rates increased by a mean of 50 – 60 paise per day. In the global market, crude oil was trading at $42 per barrel. Given this, the rates of fuel are expected to shoot up again.

India, which imports 80 per cent of the entire crude requirements, revised the country’s rates on a day to day as per the dynamic pricing scheme, which was adopted in June 2017. As per the mechanism, the rates are hooked into international oil rates on a 15-day average and, therefore, the rupee – US dollar exchange rate.
