From an RTI response, around Rupees, 4,700 crores were paid toward over 2 lakh fatality cases filed under Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY) from the last financial year, which saw COVID-19 leave a gravel path of demise.

In 2020-21, 2,50,351 death claims had been registered under the PMJJBY, with 13,100 of them being dismissed. The final 2,346 allegations were being investigated. As per the response, fatality claims totaling Rs 3,563.78 crore were resolved under PMJJBY in 2019-20 in 1,78,189 cases, compared to Rs 2,704.24 crore in 1,35,212 cases in 2018-19.

According to the Union Health Ministry, as of 8:00 a.m. Sunday, 3,02,33,183 people had tested positive for the coronavirus. 3,95,751 of them seem to have died. Insurance can cover an individual aged 18 to 50 with savings account under PMJJBY by reimbursing Rupees 330 annual costs.
