Vehicle Registration

RTO (Regional Transport Office) is a government organisation used to keep track of vehicles on Indian roads. So, every vehicle in India must be registered in the RTO. A vehicle registration card will be provided to every vehicle that is registered. Apart from this, RTO is responsible for inspecting vehicle insurances, issuing driving licences, and keeping a tab of pollution created by vehicles.

A permanent vehicle registration number will be assigned to your vehicle by the RTO that you can’t change under any circumstances. When you buy the vehicle, you will be assigned a temporary registration number by the dealer, which is valid for a month. After that, Within one month, an applicant should get their permanent registration number for the vehicle.

Where can one apply for Vehicle Registration?

If one wants to register their new vehicle, they will have to submit a duly filled form along with the prescribed fees and submit everything to the District Transport Office located in your area. An applicant should submit the application within 7 days from the date they purchased the vehicle.

Documents required for the Vehicle Registration

An applicant should submit all the documents that are required during the vehicle registration process:

  • Duly filled Form Number 20 for registering a vehicle
  • Sale certificate
  •  Valid insurance certificate
  • Passport size photographs-Two copies
  • The physical production of a vehicle
  • Now an applicant should submit the Temporary Registration that the dealer assigns
  • Next, you have to submit the Invoice from the dealer
  • Clearance Certificate in case if the vehicle is imported
  • An applicant should have a Copy of PAN only if the vehicle’s cost exceeds Rs.4 lakh
  • Residence Proof should be submitted
  • Identity proof is required
  • You need to submit the Citizenship proof as well

Format For Vehicle Registration Number Plates:

  • The number plates for two-wheelers and private cars must have black letters on a white colour background (Example: KA-03-HA-1985).
  • Commercial use vehicles such as buses/ taxis and others must have black letters on the yellow colour background (Example: MH-19-AG-5465).
  • Motor vehicles of foreign consulates must have white letters on a light blue background (Example: 21 UN 12).
  • Finally, for vehicles used by the president/ state governors, license plates are not necessary.

Vehicle Registration Process In India:

For registering a new private/non-commercial vehicle, especially in India, an application will be required that is to be made in CMV Form 20 and must be submitted at the RTO located in your area. The submission of sales certificate/ roadworthiness certificate/ print of chassis number and other documents with the application and you have to pay only the one-time road tax and registration fee for the completion of this process. After the vehicle’s inspection, The registration number is allotted by the designated officer at the nearest RTO.

  • Form 20
  • PUC (Pollution Under Control) certificate/ Roadworthiness certificate.
  • There is a Duly filled Form 22 and get it from the manufacturer of the vehicle.
  • Certificate of Sales in Form 21
  • Insurance Certificate
  • Address proof : Ration Card/ Aadhar Card/ Voter ID Card/ PAN Card/ LIC Policy
  • Affidavit by the vehicle owner
  • 3 Passport-sized photos
  • Temporary Registration Certificate
  • The Lifetime tax for the non-transport vehicle

How can one check their two-wheeler registration?

  • STEP 1: Visit the official website of VAHAN.
  • STEP 2: Click on “Know Your Vehicle Details” on the website.
  • STEP 3: Finally, Enter the Registration Number of the vehicle/ or the bike’s plate number to get the information.

Can we do the registration of the vehicle online?

After downloading, launch the app and go to the ‘RTA Services’ section just to start the online registration process. Now you have to Select ‘My Vehicles’ on the dashboard, which is followed by ‘Renew Vehicles’.

Can one drive their car after the registration expires?

Once the registration expires, a grace period of 30 days will be provided and it is a must that you should renew the registration only in that period. Ignorance of this will lead to the result that you can’t able to drive without registration anymore.
