What Is National Technical Textiles Mission (NTTM)?

The National Technical Textiles Mission (NTTM) was approved by the CCEA (Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs). This mission was introduced by the Government of India with an aim to make the country, i.e. India a leader of technical textiles all around the world.

Some of the important facts about the National Technical Textiles Mission (NTTM) are mentioned below:

  • The CCEA (Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs) chaired by the Prime Minister, Mr Narendra Modi approved the setting of this mission
  • This will be having a four-year implementation period which will be from FY 2020-21 to 2023-24
  • An amount of Rs 1480 crore has been finalised by the Government authorities for this mission
  • A Mission Directorate would be operational in the Textile Ministry
  • The Coordinator for the National Technical Textiles Mission (NTTM) is Mr Nihar Ranjan Dash by the President of India
  • This mission was set up with the Make in India initiative by the Indian Government

In order to understand the importance of introducing a mission for the promotion of technical textiles, it becomes important to understand the meaning of technical textiles.

The following are the main objectives of the National Technical Textiles Mission (NTTM) which are focused to set up an independent mission for developing technical textiles in India:

  • The main aim of this mission is to get India at the highest position in Technical Textiles globally
  • It also aims to improve the penetration level of the technical textiles in India
  • It should also be noted that this penetration level is low in the country at 5-10% in comparison to 30-70% in the developed countries
  • The Government authorities will also aim to increase the global market for Indian Technical Textiles
  • To simply the mission, is divided into four main components
  • The Mission is focused on the usage of textiles in different flagship missions, various programmes of the country

What Are The Components Of The National Technical Textiles Mission (NTTM)?

There are four main components of the National Technical Textiles Mission (NTTM) are as under:

  • Component-1 (Research, Innovation and Development)
  1. It comprises an amount of Rs. 100 crores
  2. There must be fundamental research at the fibre level which will aim at path-breaking products
  3. There will be application-based research in agro-textiles, geotextiles, etc.
  • Component-2 (Promotion and Market Development)
  1. A growth rate of around 15-20% per annum will be targeted to take the level of the domestic market
  2. The medium of the market promotion, market development and technical collaborations
  3. The level of the market will be raised to 40-50 billion USD
  • Component-3 (Export Promotion)
  1. The current value of the export is around Rs 14000 crore per annum
  2. Through this component, the mission focuses to increase the export value by Rs 20000 crore by the year 2021-22
  • Component-4 (Education, Training, Skill Development)
  1. In order to meet the fast-growing technical textiles and challenges, education must be promoted at the engineering level
  2. Highly skilled labour will also be created to meet the requirements of this mission

With all these four components, the Indian Government is planning to promote and develop the Indian Technical Textiles manifolds and it will affect the economy of the country.
