What is TN Registration?

TN Registration stands for Tamil Nadu Registration, which was started through The Motor Vehicle Act of 1988, making it compulsory that all the vehicles be registered. Every vehicle in India is assigned a registration number based on its state and the RTO where the vehicle has been registered.

What is the process of TN Registration?

Now many processes are followed related to vehicle registration. Some of them are listed below:-

  • Transfer of Vehicle Registration
  • Re-registration of the vehicle
  • Obtaining the NOC
  • Cancellation of the NOC
  • Hire-purchase
  • Termination of the hire-purchase
  • Transfer of vehicle ownership.

Some of them have been explained below.

Temporary Vehicle Registration

In this process, a vehicle owner may get their vehicle temporarily registered with a registering company. This temporary vehicle registration is valid for a maximum of a 1-month post which can not be renewed. The dealer applies on the behalf of the vehicle owner to the Regional Transport Office or Motor Vehicle Inspector Grade for a temporary vehicle registration number. This process takes up to 3 days and requires the vehicle owner to produce the vehicle for inspection.

Mentioned below are the documents required for the Temporary Vehicle Registration:

  1. Application Form-20 (one more copy if the vehicle is with hypothecation)
  2. Form-21: Sales certificate
  3. Road-worthiness certificate and Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificate in Form-22 obtained from the manufacturer of the vehicle
  4. Vehicle Insurance Certificate
  5. Form-60/61 from the Income Tax Department or GIR or Pan card
  6. Address proof (one of the following):
    • Ration Card
    • LIC Policy
    • Voter ID Card
    • Passport size photos
    • Affidavit by the applicant attested by a Notary, Executive, or First Class Judicial Magistrate.

Change Of Adress In-Vehicle Registration Certificate 

The change in the vehicle owner’s address has to be recorded in the Registration Certificate. The person must give the application to the Regional Transport Officer or Motor Vehicle Inspector Grade I. The list of documents required for changing the address in vehicle RC is mentioned below.

  1. Intimation of address change in Form No. 33.
  2. Vehicle Registration Certificate (RC)
  3. Vehicle insurance document
  4. Address proof (one of the following):
    • Ration Card
    • Voter ID Card
    • Life Insurance Policy
    • Passport size photos
    • Salary slips issued by a government office
    • Affidavit by the applicant attested by a Notary, Executive, or First Class Judicial Magistrate
  5. No Objection Certificate (NOC) is obtained from the financier of the vehicle if the vehicle is purchased on a loan
  6. The valid road tax receipt
  7. Pollution Under Control (PUC) Certificate

Renewal Of Vehicle Registration 

After 15 years from the date of original registration, the owner of a private/non-commercial must apply for vehicle registration renewal. The registration certificate must be renewed 60 days before the expiry of vehicle registration. The application has to be made to the Regional Transport Officer/Motor Vehicle Inspector Grade I, and the vehicle needs to be produced for physical inspection. Following is the list of needed documents:

  1. Duly filled in form 25
  2. Vehicle Registration Certificate (RC)
  3. Vehicle Insurance Certificate
  4. PUC Certificate
  5. Tax receipt

Transfer of Vehicle Ownership

If you are selling your vehicle to another person or if you wish to transfer the ownership of the vehicle to somebody else’s name, then an application has to be made by the vehicle owner in Form-29 to the Regional Transport Officer/Motor Vehicle Inspector Grade I. The list of documents of vehicle ownership transfer is below:

  1. Form 29: Intimation of the vehicle transfer (in duplicate)
  2. Duly filled Form-30 if the vehicle is hypothecated
  3. Vehicle Registration Certificate (RC)
  4. Vehicle Insurance Document
  5. Address proof (any one of the following):
    • Ration Card
    • Voter ID Card
    • Life Insurance Policy
    • Passport size photos
    • Salary slips issued by a government office
    • Affidavit by the applicant attested by a Notary, Executive, or First Class Judicial

Look for the car’s VIN. With the VIN and the plate number, you should be able to locate the registered owner.

Visit the website of the RTO where your car is registered and fill up the registration number of your car in the given section and click “proceed” to find the policy details.
