Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana: 41.75 crore bank accounts opened?

The government today said a total of 41.75 crore accounts had been opened under Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) of which 35.96 crore accounts were active.

This was stated by Anurag Singh Thakur, Minister of Trade Unions and Union Affairs in a written reply to a question from Lok Sabha today.

The government collected data from Public Sector Banks (PSBs) [including sponsored Rigital Rural Banks (RRBs) and major Private Sector banks, from January 27 this year.

Under Pradhan Mantri Jan-DhanYojana (PMJDY) a bank account can be opened by any bank branch or Business Correspondent (BC) including those of private sector banks.

Anurag Thakur said, “The total number of PMJDY accounts opened by PSBs (including RRB-funded) and 40.48 crore and 1.27 crore private sector banks respectively.”

Providing further details, Anurag Thakur said the accounts were opened under PMJDY through basic bank savings accounts (BSBD).

In accordance with the RBI guidelines dated 10 June 2019, banks are required to provide the following resources, free of charge, to BSBD account holders, without the requirement of a low balance. PMJDY is a Basic Savings Bank Deposit (BSBD) primary account where banks are required to provide free basic banking services to BSBD account holders without the requirement of a small balance.

The following are the basic services offered under PMJDY:

  • Money Deposit at bank branch and ATMs / CDMs
  • Credit card for any electronic channel or using deposit / collection check
  • There is no limit to to the amount of deposits that can be made per month
  • Minimum withdrawals per month, including ATM withdrawals
  • An ATM or ATM-cum-Debit Card is provided along with the account

During the closure of Covid-19, the Mode Government announced a large number of grants transferred through direct bank transfers (DBT) or to the account of Prime Minister Jan Dhan. PMJDY is a national investment project to provide access to banking institutions in an accessible manner.
